Description

A classic beignet recipe is pillowy, New Orleans-style fried dough. Enjoy these sprinkled with powdered sugar or dipped in a sauce!

Ingredients

¾ cup warm water (110–115°F)

1 teaspoon rapid rise yeast

1 egg, lightly beaten

½ cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons shortening

¼ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 dash nutmeg

3¼ cups all-purpose flour

1 quart vegetable oil for frying

½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Place warm water in a bowl and dissolve yeast. Let sit 5 minutes.

2. Combine egg, cream, shortening, sugar, salt, and nutmeg in a mixer.

3. Add activated yeast and flour. Mix until smooth but slightly sticky.

4. Form dough into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Let rise for 1 hour.

5. Heat oil to 360–370°F in a deep pot.

6. Roll dough ½ inch thick, cut into 2½-inch squares.

7. Fry until golden brown, 1–2 minutes per side.

8. Remove and drain on paper towels.

9. Dust generously with powdered sugar.

10. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Make ahead: Dough can be refrigerated up to 3 days.

Reheat in a 200°F oven to keep warm before serving.

Serve with caramel or chocolate dipping sauces for extra indulgence.
